The Long Walk 2019 reached Maspalomas on schedule, at sunset on Sunday 29 September, after crossing the mountain, going coast to coast over the highest point on Gran Canaria!
Thank you all, for all your support!
The Long Walkers could not have reached their destination without you, donations are still open and there is one more walk to do.

Join us on Saturday October 5 for the Caminata Maspalomas Contra el cancer, from Parque Sur de Maspalomas to the Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse, starts at 5pm

The Long Walkers 2019

The Big Picture 2019

The Long Walk is the annual coast-to-coast charity hike across the beautiful, sub-tropical island of Gran Canaria.

We raise funds for our local causes and charitable organisations on the island, helping those we can to overcome challenges.

The event itself also provides unparalleled opportunities for team building, personal development and direct community action while negotiating a great sub-tropical wilderness in a safe and motivating environment.

Sometimes we are all faced with a mountain ahead of us, and challenge to be overcome.  This walk simply demonstrates that together we can all cross mountains, one step at a time.

Will you walk the walk? Celebrating Women, Fighters, Survivors & Families in Need

All are welcome to the Puerto Rico Walk, meeting from 5pm Saturday September 28 as The Long Walk 2019 crosses the highest summit on Gran Canaria for the 8th year running, we are hoping to gather a few extra funds with the extraordinary help of The Pub and her patrons, who will be raising funds in the run up to International Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), with every penny raised this year going to benefit Women, Fighters, Survivors & Families with donations to both the ACCM Canarian Breast Cancer Association and the Mogán Neighbours Food Project (Nabojhelpen) who support the most vulnerable in our local community.

In 2011 The Canary News, Gran Canaria’s English Newspaper, ran a 3 month campaign, with GLAY, in the run up to the 10th Maspalomas Pride to raise money for our local breast cancer association the ACCM.  We encouraged English speakers from across the island to join us, which they did; with none more successful in raising funds than a group of girls from “The Pub” in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaira who managed to raise more than 7,000€ by performing their provocative Burlesque show in the bars of Puerto Rico Shopping Centre.

By the end of the campaign, with a finale held at the famous Sioux City music hall, and supported by coach loads of locals, who came in buses supplied by tour operator TUI España, the combined efforts of the English speaking community on Gran Canaria resulted in a massive donation of more than 20,000€ to the ACCM Asociación Canaria de Cancer de Mama

The following year, 2012, the good patrons of The Pub got together to hold the very first Puerto Rico Walk, from Puerto Rico Shopping Center to Playa de Amadores and back again, raising more than 2000€ on the day and leading directly to the creation of The Long Walk as part of an attention grabbing promise by a local newspaper editor to help gain support for that 1st solidarity walk.

Several other walks and fundraising events have since been initiated all across the island, from Maspalomas to Las Palmas, and The Long Walk has continued coast-to-coast, over the highest mountain on Gran Canaria, ever since.  However, it all started at “The Pub” who supported The Canary News from that very first successful campaign in 2011.

Seven years later, and with well over 100,000€ raised and counting, The Long Walk is once more crossing the island, hoping to meet a few of our supporters along the way, along with some of the original faces and instigators of this now iconic solidarity event.  This is The Puerto Rico Walk!

Ken Timon is a high flying legal beagle and media executive based out of London.  No stranger to the highlife surrounded by the world of film and television, he comes to us fresh from the fight, having spent the summer training and just a few weeks ago having completed a 25km charity walk raising money for great causes in the UK.

His decision to fly out and experience The Long Walk for the first time was not one taken lightly, and as fit as a fiddle as he may be, he understands that he is about to undertake one of the most gruelling challenges of his life, as he makes his stand in solidarity for Breast Cancer sufferers and families in need on the beautiful sub-tropical island of Gran Canaria.  This guy is unstoppable, and he is going coast-to-coast over the highest summit on the island.

Please support him in his effort to show that no mountain can stand in your way, once you decide to put one foot in front of the other and walk the walk…

We are most proud to welcome Ken with us on this extraordinary journey.

Dean Murphy works at the famous Lucey Byrne’s The Shamrock Bar Bar in Shopping Center Puerto Rico and last year came out of nowhere to raise loads of money and awareness about the charities we support.  He walked the entire third day with us last year, but has decided to come back to attempt to walk all 3 days this year.

We welcome Dean, and his support team, to this year´s walk, and hope you will support them in what is likely to be a real challenge.

“My name is Dean Murphy.

A couple of years ago, my family and I learned that my dad had a brain tumor ( a very aggressive one) I’ll not go into the ins and out off it, but we only had 6 months. He died in February 2018.

So as you can understand this has pulled all the hart strings to do this walk. He was only 65 years old. My mother in-law passed away due to the same brain cancer just months later

Due to to this I would like to do the walk. To honour both of them.

Paul Gilliam has lived and worked on Gran Canaria for more years than any of us care to remember!

After having lost his mother to cancer, and on hearing about the very first success of The Long Walk back in 2012, he wanted to take part in something that would help highlight local cancer charities on the island he loves so much.

Paul, strongly supported by his team, has been a leader among participants since 2013, and has completed more coast-to-coast walks than nearly anyone else taking part.  We are proud to be able to call him President of The Long Walk Association.

A keen walker, he has been as delighted by the wild interior of Gran Canaria as he has been the huge support shown by others around him for his continued commitment to “giving something back” to the island he has made his home.

Paul and his co-workers have been the single most important team supporting the event, enabling thousands of euros every year through various fund raising activities, and by every year voluntarily joining The Long Walk across Gran Canaria.  On the third day of The Long Walk, Paul is joined by many of his supporters and colleagues for the last 20km or so to the finish line.

“After losing my Mum to cancer, I have always wanted to raise money to help out people going through the pain and battle against Cancer.

We want to support cancer patients and sufferers locally on Gran Canaria. We work with patient associations, created by sufferers and cancer survivors, to look after the psychological and emotional needs of the patient as well as their immediate family.

While lots of Spanish state money nationally goes to large cancer research and medical treatment organisations, after treatment care and patient support during recovery in Spain is not well provided.

It falls to locally organised groups to try to provide the necessary emotional and psychological support with experience based information to help not only the sufferer feel that they can get through the challenge ahead of them, but also to provide support for their life partners and even their children to help them understand what is happening, and how they can stay positive and help to be part of overcoming the challenges they face.

We want residents and visitors to Gran Canaria to join us in the message that by working together we can all cross mountains, no matter high, no matter how far we have to go to successfully get to the end of the journey we must face.”

You can donate directly to Paul´s online campaign either here or by visiting his Just Giving Page:

Paul’s total is inclusive of what he has raised through his own endeavors on JustGiving….

I am pretty passionate about The Long Walk.  Not only has it saved my life more than once, it has introduced me to some of the most inspirational, excellent people and ideas I am ever likely to encounter during this brief encounter we call life.

The Long Walk has taught me more about what we can do than I ever thought possible, and it has brought together a wide range of extraordinary individuals and institutions to become one of the things I am proudest to be associated with.

I am deeply humbled that you´re all going to let me do another one…

Sanna Nevalainen has worked tirelesly to support The Long Walk since 2012 and is now Secretary of the Association which she helped found

A great choice not only for her good looks and tenacious manner, Sanna is also one of the original founding members of The Long Walk, having been one of the first walkers to go the distance, on the very first walk from Puerto Rico to Roque Nublo back in 2012.

Since then she has worked tirelessly for the event, helping to ensure that it is properly organised and supported, either by herself walking or by driving support cars, looking after bookings, or simply ensuring that the more gung-ho among us do not starve!

The amazing Mari Hartell was a student of The British School on Gran Canaria born and raised by her Finnish parents here on the island, she is a truly international character.  Having become a teacher of languages and primary subjects, she also ran her own restaurant business and events company, and has a broad range of life experience, sassy and filled with fun.

A busy working mum, she has two beautiful daughters to whom she is devoted.  She is also an avid animal lover and rescuer with seemingly boundless levels of energy.

After accommodating The Long Walkers for two year´s running at her family finca in the hills above Maspalomas she decided last year she was going to personally join the effort and walk coast to coast over her island home to raise money and awareness for the local Breast Cancer association and the food bank.

This will be her third solidarity walk over the island, aiming to prove to her two daughters that there are no limits in life other than the ones you set yourself.  She is epic in every way and a total true hero.

When asked about her motivations Mari says “I wanted to challenge myself while at the same time really doing something to help others.”

Robbie Mcmillen is 36 years young and from Dublin Ireland
Famed for his work as Compere host and genesis taker in Dicey Reillys bar in Puerto Rico
He’s been on this beautiful island for 8 years now and loves it

I think I can safely say I’ll be the first 19 stone gob shite to do this walk with very little training since my 14 birthday.when I only just passed gym in school😂I will give it my all😜it’s for a good cause

Leo is  49 and a rather astounding hypnotist by trade as well as a fully qualified Hypnotherapist.

He left school and worked as a painter and decorator until he turned 30 and moved to Ibiza where he worked as a podium dancer for likes of Judge Jules, Dave Pearce and Manumission.

After 6 months he returned to UK and got a job at a nightclub called Jumpin Jaks and after 2 weeks moved to Middlesborough as assistant Entertainments manager and then spent 3 years in Coventry for the flagship Jaks.

In 2005 he moved abroad with Thompson working in Mallorca, Lanzarote, costa del sol and somehow ended up on the beautiful island of Gran Canaria where he found love with a singer from garbos and moved to Sweden then Thailand.

In 2007 they moved back and this year started working with young Robbie McMillan in the famous Dicey Riellys bar where they put together an Ant & Dec style comedy show with hypnotism.

Together me and Robbie are doing the long walk for a charity. One of the charities the event supports breast cancer sufferers which as im sure for many people really hits home. Both my mum and dad had cancer so anything I can do to help raise money for this cause I will do. So please sponsor me and Robbie as we get ready for The Long Walk 2019

Celina Vandeweghe is one of those legendary, highly practical, can-do types one finds produced in few places beyond the lowlands of northern Europe. A belgian chocolate-drop of delight and wisdom Celina is always looking for ways to make The Long Walk more challenging for herself, sometimes walking over the mountain with a complete set of cutlery, kitchen utensils and her kitchen sink, all packed so ingeniously into her rucksack that it is rumoured swiss army knife makers the world over offer large rewards for information about her methods of folding and secreting, while her load carrying abilities are simply second to none.

We are all in awe of her tenacity and revere her name as one of the veteran Goddesses of The Long Walk. This year will be her 6th time walking over the mountain with us, please support her efforts by making a donation and sharing this page…

The walk is not as tough as cancer itself

People should be more aware of the people around them who are dealing with it. They don’t need the support only in the beginning but through the whole process. In the beginning people ask how you are but after a while they stop asking.

And of course this year is extra special because someone close to us is fighting it”

The Blue Explorers Dive Resort is one of the newest speciality dive centers on Gran Canaria, having become one of the most successful diving excursions on the island they this year continued their meteoric rise to fame and fortune by opening Europe´s very first Dive Resort operated totally for and by divers.  This epic team of individuals have been winning the hearts and fins of countless submarine tank suckers for years.

Every year since 2014 they have sent an epic group of adventurers in the form of the angelic Julia, salubrious Sabrina and an occasional hunky sand munching water boy.  They keep us safe and happy through tales and promise of unicorns, wizardry and underwater worlds yet to be discovered.

“Working in Gran Canaria and building our lives here, we at Blue Explorers and our friends want to help and give something back to the locals on this beautiful island.

The long walk has been running since 2012 and has grown year by year, organised by our ambitious leader Eddie! Blue Explorers first entered this beautiful yet challenging walk in 2014 and we have joined ever since. A 3 day, coast to coast long walk (…/climb) across the island of Gran Canaria, up to the highest point and back down. It is a tough challenge but “the long walkers” support each other climbing each and every…incline!

The Canary Association of Breast and Gynecological Cancer is a non-profit and independent organization. They want to support women with breast cancer and their relatives who also suffer from the disease. They have a team of professional volunteers who strive everyday to offer the best possible service and always with a smile. They aim to improve the quality of life for affected women and their families to promote personal well-being.”

Please support Steve´s epic efforts to keep us alive for all three days of The Long Walk!

Mister Steve Cashley is an active member of the English speaking community on the south of Gran Canaria.  A IT business man and tech guru he supplies and fixes a range of types of connectivity for customers across the island, focused particularly on TV and Internet.

Steve spends much of what spare time he has also supporting various other organisations and community groups, not just financially but by always lending a hand when able and assisting in the transport of donations including furniture and other large items in support of The Food Project and various animal rescue organisations.

Since the very first long walk Steve has been an active supporter of our activities, and for the last 7 years has always walked with us on the last day for the final 20km or so of The Long Walk.  This year once again he has agreed to drive our support vehicle for all three days, and so will be sent off into the mountains with a van full of luggage and water and medical supplies to become our vital link between various waypoints keeping us safe and hydrated, and acting as first responder should any of us run into difficulties.

He will be with us for the last leg from Parque Sur Maspalomas where we hope to find a few more supporters to walk the last sunset stretch to Playa del Inglés with us…

“This year, once again, I have been asked to drive the support vehicle over the three days being in attendance in case of accident or injury and meeting with the walkers to supply food and water en route.

I will also be ferrying their belongings to the two overnight stay locations. Thus, it seems that I will not be able to walk on day 3 as I have in previous years. However, if anyone wants to sponsor/ donate towards the excellent causes that we fund-raise for Canarian Breast Cancer and Gynaecological Cancer Association, the ACCMyG.org and for the Mogán Neighbours Food Bank project, Nabojelpen, which directly assists local families in need.

I have lost both parents and far too many friends and family members to cancer, so I am happy to what I can to help. Please donate “

Lesley Walport has made her home on Gran Canaria, a veteran of the tourism industry she has been available to help support The Long Walk for several years, always thinking herself incapable of doing more than driving support cars and assisting at overnight stops.  Though she might try to tell you that she suffers from various issues, including a “dead leg” and having a registered disability, all we have ever seen from her is grit, determination, a focus on overcoming every challenge and indeed the ability to not just do anything she sets her mind to, but to tenaciously master it through practice and a refusal to give up.  We never thought she had it in her to make it over the mountain, but last year she proved us dead wrong time and time again.

We are very proud to welcome Lesley for her second epic walk, and we are looking forward to seeing how her bonny scottish humour and glib wit fare on this most epic of challenges.  She sometimes says “I can´t” but usually means “Nobody would believe it, but I totally can do this”

Hi All – BEGGING ALERT!

I`m participating in the Long Walk as I believe everyone should be more aware of Cancer, and of the ways we all can help and support those who have been diagnosed.

I have lost many close friends and relatives to it. Even now a very good friend is fighting for her life after developing breast cancer and having had a double mastectomy -the scourge has spread to her brain.

This three day walk across the island I love, over it’s highest peak, is something, very small, that I can do to help. It perfectly symbolises the long struggle that sufferers have endured. It is a walk in the park by no means – I know first hand that this walk will be, long and arduous as well as both physically and mentally challenging.

I suppose I started training for this a number of years ago when I volunteered to be a support vehicle driver, then started joining the rep’s walk on the last day of the event. Every year around one hundred tour reps, many of them colleagues and ex colleagues join the last 20km or so to the finish of this epic journey.

This year I’ve been training 3 times a week, and doing about 12 km a day, joining in the training walks with veteran Long Walkers, Eddie Timon and Paul Gilliam, and plan to attempt the entire 3 day walk, over a mountain, travelling 80km on foot (you should probably donate, just for me putting up with those grumpy buggers!)

I’m walking for many but in particular Sarah Jane James, Gail Needham, Amanda McInnes, my uncle and aunt Lila and Ivor Saville and my father Abel Walport

Every penny or cent we raise will be spent to support The Long Walk fund, which is donated every year to local Breast Cancer Association ACCMyG.org who support Women and Families faced with probably the greatest challenge anyone can face, after a cáncer diagnoses, with a portion of the raised funds this year being given to our local Neighbours Food Project in Mogán (Nabhjelpen)

I hope you will support my effort, it’s going to be pretty painful, but I plan to succeed in crossing the island to show that no matter how big the challenge, the only way to get over it or through it is to put one foot in front of another and start moving.

Thank you”

are a Las Palmas business who supply Blue Chip companies and world renowned organisations with second-to-none IT resources, teams and project management.

Employing technologists, designers and programmers from around the world they deliver a range of services including bespoke apps, web site technologies and various intricately planned and executed systems deployments for global brands and local businesses alike.  They are based in Las Palmas and have found themselves benefiting from this islands unique positioning as a global tech hub, and the recent rise in Digital Nomads who travel the world and work from their laptops and shared co-working spaces.  They also have their own co-working space in the heart of the capital.

Last year the founder and visionary behind Secret Source, Richard, decided he wanted to give his more than 20 staff an opportunity to do more than just work on company business, and to show them that, to him, investment in community and in people was every bit as important as getting paid for a job well done; so having followed our endeavours on The Long Walk for several years he got his whole team to accompany us walking up the mountain to our first night base camp, 1000m above sea level, just outside the ancient settlement of Tenteniguada, to help raise some extra funds and to see us well on our way.

Not only did Richard offer them this day away from their usual work, but he also said that if they could raise 50€ or more each, that he would match it out of his own pocket!

What an extraordinary group of individuals.  We welcome them to The Long Walk.

This year we are very proud to be joined by Richard the the Secret Source team once again, who will be holding a fundraising event on Friday September 27 2019, and hope you will support them in their epic effort to support Women, Fighters, Survivors & Families in Need.

Please support Outi´s epic efforts on all three days, as our second Suomi girl bringing Finnish Sisu to The Long Walk 2019!

This is Outi’s third year on The Long Walk.  Having completed the whole 3 days back in 2015 & in 2018 she has decided that twice is just not enough and so is taking the time to do it all again and raise money for these great causes.

As with all the donations to The Long Walk fund this year  every penny we raise will be donated between the ACCM Canarian Breast Cancer Association and the Mogan Food Project, both of whom help, support and celebrate Women, Fighters, Survivors and Families in Need

“I am joining the Long walk because people close to me have (had) cancer. I have always wanted to help others and this cause is close to my heart so it was easy decision to join.

Crossing the over the mountains with an inspiring group with people with such big hearts is indescribable.

At the same time, I want to remind myself to enjoy each and every day of the beauty around me.

I am hoping I will get your support on the walk.

There will be difficult times when I feel like dropping out but knowing that step by step I am closer to the finish line I keep going on.

The feeling when you finally reach the goal after walking the three days it is amazing and worth all the pain.”

If you want to register for all of The Long Walk we require you to find a minimum subscription of 200€ to cover accommodation, food and insurance.

Thereafter we want you to aim to raise a target of 1000€ to add directly to the donation going to the charities, although we are not so strict on this, we do want to ensure that as many people as possible know about your epic undertaking and commit to supporting the effort so we definitely want you to publicise your participation as much as possible, including your commitment and your training before the event.

The Long Walk ( 3 Days ) : per person – This initial 200€ will need to be paid prior to confirmation.  You can have your accommodation sponsored for you to walk, but this needs to be clearly stated to the sponsor.
